cheesecake, curry and mangoes
yest we had an indian theme dinner for our fren who was celebrating his 25th bday... (don't worry his name shall not be mentioned) we had briyani, dry chicken curry, papadams, mango lassi, some indian tomato salad. and for the surprise bday cake, we baked him a new york vanilla cheesecake (courtesy of jamie oliver.. my 偶像) as well as brownies with walnuts. of cos.. no dinner wld be complete w/out alcohol. cos ALL of us present were alckies (new, nicer term for alcoholics heh!) ja and i bought a bottle of brown brothers' lexia (dessert wine) love it's sweetness.. and the freds brought some hazelnut liqueur which tasted very nice.. somewhat like baileys. i guess our fren was pleasantly surprised when we brought out the cake. i reckon he didn't expect a cake, certainly not one that we 亲手baked. and the card.. with all 5 of our well wishes...
actually.. ja was the one who came up with the plan.. and i just helped her along with it. i must say we work well together. it's hard to find 2 pple who can work in the kitchen w/out arguing abt how things should be done. most of the times, my mom has to forcefully threaten to not give me my dinner if i didn't leave her alone to cook within the next 5 secs. and my dad gets frustrated about my mom nagging him for the mess he usually leaves the kitchen in. my parents just don't get along when it comes to cooking. anyways... sidetracked. sooooo.......... one week before the bday thingy, we were already pretty excited abt the whole surprise, and of the cooking that needs to be done. strange how 2 singulars can get excited over cooking... nvm. yeah we were planning and searching on my fav recipes webbies, wanting to try out sooo many things (more than we cld have handled for that night). the week passed pretty fast, w/out waning our excitement.
thursday came, we energetically and deliriously started our preparations for the cheesecake. when i put the cheesecake into the oven, with my thumping heart resounding in my ears (okie i exaggerate!) i wondered how it wld turn.. altho ja seemed highly optimistic. well i guess we shd not have flopped on ja's bed for that long.. cos other than the super brown top and sides, we have received good reviews abt the cake (esp from junyi who thot it was store bought *applause*). friday... the BIG day! planned the day out perfectly... but as always, nothing will ever go according to THE PLAN (u know how u always have THE PLAN but nv seem to be able to carry it out FULLY?? okie maybe it's just me.. heh) so we were supposed to have come back at like 2 plus but we only managed to hasten back at like 3 plus. the rest of the late afternoon kinda passed in a flurry of activites...
at the 6 o'clock mark, the stress level in the kitchen was sky high.. and when i say sky high i mean sky high (how high is the sky? that's how stressed we were.. okie that was lame.. shut up chels). we didn't have enough stock... we hadn't cooked the briyani (and nv before), the brownies and not even pulping the mangoes. and they were supposed to arrive at 1830. i have nv been glad that pple are late before man. but well stress is oft a wonderous things. u can get 2 dishes and 1 drink done in just under 50 mins. till now i still wondered how we managed that! *another round of applause* (this is like a self gratifying post..) with the guys not yet arrived, i still have some time to even ambience the place up a bit. table lamp and candles did the trick.
u know how some pple just make u feel like u cooked the most delicious thing in the world? (altho it's alright only?) yeah.. that how i felt when i looked at the 4 guys digging into our food with enthusiasm. like real enthusiasm... esp the freds... hahaahha i look at them eat.. i feel hungry also, and i feel delighted that pple appreciate our effort at cooking. (there's no I in teamwork.. good job ja!!!!!!) dinner was filled with chatter, innuendos (as usual and the bday boy was on a roll...), second helpings and sounds of 6 satisfied stomachs. brought out the cake and the card that we made for our fren, he didn't expect it and the look of surprise on his face was so worth it man.. kuulll.. recorded the whole thing, snapped a few pics, and we started digging in. played the game (the category game) that ja absolutely hates again... but bday boy was nice and protected her.. ahhaha! after which we proceeded to captain sterling's along stirling for drinks.. (i shall not blog abt that.. cos it wld then make the post toooo long.. and well it was just nice.. and i know some pple're going to smirk when they read this.. but what the hell..) well HAPPY BIRTHDAY again! and in dedication to the 1/4 of a century old person.. the blog shall be in his fav colour... haahaha...
